PAMIA provides professional indemnity insurance, specially tailored to meet the requirements of UK and Irish patent and trade mark attorneys in private practice. 

Eligibility 

PAMIA provides professional indemnity insurance for individuals or firms who meet the criteria outlined below. However, the Board does have discretion to admit other individuals or firms if they consider their practices to be compatible with the generality of the membership as a whole. 

Typically Members meet the following criteria: 

  • Predominantly undertake patent or trade mark work 

  • Carry out at least half of their work in the UK, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Republic of Ireland, other European Union countries, the European Economic Area, Singapore and Hong Kong 

  • Regulated by IPReg where the practice is based in the UK 

PAMIA covers the full spectrum of patent and trade mark attorney business structures, reflecting the diverse nature of this sector: 

Individuals

The individual must be a U.K. Chartered Patent Attorney or a U.K. Registered Patent Attorney or a Corporate Member of C.I.T.M.A. or an Irish Registered Patent Agent or an Irish Registered Trade Mark Attorney. 

Limited Companies

At least half of the directors, and the shareholder(s) who own at least half of the company’s Equity Securities, must be U.K. Chartered Patent Attorneys or U.K. Registered Patent Attorneys or Corporate Members of C.I.T.M.A. or Irish Registered Patent Agents or Irish Registered Trade Mark Attorneys.

Partnerships

At least half of the partners must be U.K. Chartered Patent Attorneys or U.K. Registered Patent Attorneys or Corporate Members of C.I.T.M.A. or Irish Registered Patent Agents or Irish Registered Trade Mark Attorneys.

Limited Liability Partnerships

At least half the members must be U.K. Chartered Patent Attorneys or U.K. Registered Patent Attorneys or Corporate Members of C.I.T.M.A. or Irish Registered Patent Agents or Irish Registered Trade Mark Attorneys and such members must own at least half the equity in the limited liability partnership.
